During the opening of the 1st International Colloquium “Fidel: Legacy and Future,” Mikhail Shvydkoy, the Russian leader’s special envoy for cultural cooperation, read two messages from Putin addressed to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Raul Castro, and to President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
The Russian head of state emphasized that the memory of Fidel Castro is honored with deep respect in Russia; he described Castro as a loyal and unconditional friend and acknowledged his extraordinary contribution to building a comprehensive partnership between Havana and Moscow.
The message addressed to Diaz-Canel highlighted that, under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief, enormous socioeconomic achievements were attained and the island’s international prestige was greatly enhanced.
Likewise, it acknowledged Fidel Castro’s tireless efforts toward building a just and democratic world order.
After reading the messages, Shvydkoy spoke on his own behalf, recalling personal moments that underscored the deep connection between the peoples of Russia and Cuba.
