Colombia: Petro calls on Historic Pact party to mobilize solidarity

Bogota, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on all members of the progressive Historic Pact party to coordinate efforts and mobilize solidarity with the communities affected by the earthquake that struck the country.

On his X account, Petro expressed his solidarity with all those affected and stated that the national government must guarantee an immediate, coordinated, and humane response—encompassing search and rescue, medical care, assisted evacuation, temporary shelter, water, food, and ongoing support.

He emphasized that in a national emergency, there can be no forgotten territories or second-class citizens, and that assistance must prioritize those in greatest need.

For its part, the Historic Pact announced that, in the wake of the tragedy—which has already left 111 dead and over 80 injured—it will set up a collection point for humanitarian aid at its Bogota headquarters.

It also announced that lawmakers from its parliamentary caucus will donate a portion of their salaries to the Red Cross.

The party affirmed that its members would make themselves available to national and local authorities to assist with necessary actions and help care for the affected communities.

The group also rejected any attempt to gain political capital from the tragedy, stating: “This is not the time for pettiness, political calculation, or confrontation. It is a time for unity, solidarity, and strength. Colombia needs us united; life comes first,” the statement concluded.
