Regional platform expresses solidarity with the Sahrawi people

Buenos Aires, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) The Latin American and Caribbean Platform in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People strongly condemns the decision by the Colombian government—led by the far-right Abelardo de la Espriella—to recognize Morocco's alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara.

In doing so, Espriella disregards the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence, the solidarity movement states in a declaration.

The statement notes that the Colombian Constitution establishes that the State’s foreign relations are founded on national sovereignty, respect for the self-determination of peoples, and the principles of international law.

The signatories emphasize that the Espriella government’s decision also represents a serious regression from the policy pursued during Gustavo Petro’s presidency, under which Colombia re-established sovereign relations with the SADR.

Furthermore, they argue that this decision is not an isolated diplomatic act; rather, it is part of the Espriella government’s political and international alignment with the U.S. administration led by Donald Trump and the Zionist government of Israel led by Benjamin Netanyahu.

They maintain that these leaders support the Moroccan monarchy’s expansionist claims regarding Western Sahara.

They point out that the Trump administration unilaterally recognized Morocco’s alleged sovereignty over Sahrawi territory, while the Netanyahu regime deepened the political, military, and strategic alliance between Israel and Morocco and subsequently backed those same ambitions held by Rabat.
