The political-cultural event took place near the home where his father, Angel Castro, was born; the site—now a House Museum—became the new home for the image of Jose Marti, a project promoted by the Lancara-Cuba Friendship Association and created by sculptor Marcos Escudero Perez.
The bust, located near the House Museum and Interpretation Center for Galician Emigration in Láncara, was unveiled by Marcelino Medina, Cuba’s Ambassador to Spain, and Antonio Sobrado, president of the Lancara-Cuba Friendship Association.
Attendees included Efren Castro Caloto, Vice President of the Lugo Provincial Council; Angel Garcia Seoane, Mayor of Oleiros; Ingrid Izquierdo Sterling, Consul General of Cuba for Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria; and Martin Pacheco, Consul General of Venezuela.
Additionally, representing the Castro family were Marcos Antonio Fraga Acosta, grandson of Angelita Castro, and Hector Castro Santana, grandson of Ramón Castro (the eldest of Fidel’s siblings).
Prior to the keynote address by Ambassador Marcelino Medina, several Spanish and Cuban dignitaries spoke at the event.
During the ceremony, the ICAP Friendship Medal was awarded to Angel Garcia Seoane, Mayor of Oleiros; Juan Luis Vallina, of the Peace and Friendship Association of Aviles, Asturias; and Gustavo Luca de Tena, of the “Francisco Villamil” Galician-Cuban Friendship Association.
