Brazil’s Vermelho portal launches series on Fidel Castro’s centenary

Brasilia, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Vermelho portal has launched a special series dedicated to Fidel Castro, marking the centenary of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution's birth.

In its first installment, titled “100 Years of Fidel: The Dates That Forged the Commander of the Cuban Revolution,” the outlet reconstructs Fidel’s life through 18 key moments, ranging from his birth in Biran on August 13, 1926, to his death in Havana on November 25, 2016.

The article highlights significant milestones such as his education at the University of Havana and his involvement in the student movement, the assault on the Moncada Barracks on July 26, 1953, the defense speech known as “History Will Absolve Me,” the *Granma* landing in 1956, and the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959.

It also covers pivotal moments from the early stages of the Revolution, including the proclamation of its socialist character in 1961, the Bay of Pigs (Playa Giron) invasion, and the 1962 Missile Crisis.

The series further explores the international dimensions of Fidel’s leadership, paying special attention to Cuban internationalism in Africa and Cuba’s involvement in Angola.

Finally, the series reviews periods of particular complexity for Cuba, such as the “Special Period” following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the protests of August 1994, Pope John Paul II’s visit to the island in 1998, and the mobilization for the return of the child Elian Gonzalez in 2000.
