Historic victory for the Labor Movement in Uruguay

Montevideo, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan labor movement achieved a historic victory this week: a reduction in the workday without loss of pay.

This was the result of a long struggle by the National Union of Construction and Related Activities (Sunca), which ratified it in a massive assembly.

A multitude of union members approved the agreement, considered a historic victory for the labor movement, which was celebrated in Plaza 1º de Mayo in the capital, in front of the Legislative Palac

The union president, Richard Ferreira, highlighted the context of a “tremendous cor

porate offensive” in which the negotiations took place.

“We are not, do not consider us second-class workers, we are construction industry workers who want, demand, and insist on being treated as people, as human beings, who build the wealth of our country,” the union leader declared.

The secretary general de of Sunca, Javier Diaz, stated that during the 126 days of negotiations, “the social and political right mounted a brutal smear campaign” against the union and, furthermore, “attempted to criminalize the protests” with criminal and civil complaints against the organization.

“Tonight they won’t be able to sleep, because neither the entire ideological campaign, nor all the money in the world, nor the entire advertising campaign against these working people will be able to break the dignity of this union. The unity of construction workers is unbreakable,” Diaz affirmed.
