Dominican Republic records 1,042 infant deaths in eight months

Santo Domingo, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Republic reported 1,042 infant deaths during the first 30 weeks of 2026, a figure representing a slight decrease compared to the 1,134 deaths recorded during the same period last year.

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System informed that 40 infants under one year old died this last week; of these, 33 were neonatal deaths—meaning the infants died within their first 28 days of life.

The Public Health report also noted three maternal deaths in the last seven days: two involving Dominican women and one involving a Haitian woman, with ages ranging from 26 to 30.

Two of these deaths occurred in Santo Domingo and one in La Romana province. So far this year, 76 maternal deaths have been recorded: 42 involving Dominican women, 32 Haitian, one Venezuelan, and one Spanish.

Regarding vector-borne diseases, Sinave recorded two new cases of dengue fever, bringing the total to 224 positive cases and one death as of epidemiological week 30.

There have been 146 confirmed cases of malaria during the first eight months of 2026, with no deaths, while leptospirosis cases total 260, including two new cases reported this week—both in Santo Domingo.

Authorities also observed a persistence of acute respiratory diseases during the week and confirmed four cases of SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) and cases of cyclosporiasis, among other events of international interest.
