Ecuador: Luisa Gonzalez to seek prefecture under Pachakutik banner

Quito, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) Former Ecuadorian presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez will run for the prefecture of the coastal province of Manabi in the November 29 local elections under the banner of the indigenous movement Pachakutik.

The decision to run under a different party stems from the suspension of her own organization, the Citizen Revolution (RC).

That political force—the main opposition group in Ecuador—had initially sought the support of the Amigo movement, but it, too, was provisionally suspended by the Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE).

Local media reported that Pachakutik notified the National Electoral Council (CNE) in Manabí of the withdrawal of its original pre-candidates to make way for González and physician/former assembly member Gabriel Giler as candidates for prefect and vice-prefect, respectively.

Her alliance with Pachakutik is not new; during the 2025 presidential runoff, the indigenous movement supported her bid for the presidency—a contest ultimately won by the current leader, Daniel Noboa.

The leader’s candidacy must still complete the formal registration process with the National Electoral Council, which set August 17 as the deadline to register candidacies for the upcoming November 29 elections.

With the registration phase closing in just a few days, authorized parties—including the ruling party—are finalizing last-minute procedures.
