Manuel Salazar, a leader of the Communist Party of Labor (PCT), stated that the protest aims to express the opposition of various sectors to a measure he described as an affront to Cuba.
He noted that, so far, about seven organizations are directly involved in organizing the event, though he explained that outreach efforts are underway with other social, labor, and democratic movements to expand the scope of the gathering.
He indicated that the organizers hope the rally will extend beyond groups traditionally identified with the Left and serve as a broader expression of societal sectors rejecting the government’s decision.
The call for the protest follows the Dominican government’s request for Cuba to withdraw several members of its diplomatic mission and their family members.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not disclose the names, ranks, or roles of the officials involved, stating that it would not provide further details due to the nature of diplomatic communications.
Salazar criticized the stance taken by President Luis Abinader’s administration and reiterated the organizing groups’ disagreement with the measure adopted against the Cuban diplomatic mission.
Earlier, the PCT had described the measure as a “monumental disgrace.”
