Frente Amplio defends the right path for Uruguay

Montevideo, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) The Frente Amplio (FA) conducted a political review, highlighting its chosen course amidst a complex national, regional, and international landscape.

In its “Accountability Report” to the public—titled “A Country on the Right Path”—FA President Fernando Pereira, joined by Vice President Carolina Cosse and Presidential Secretary Alejandro Sánchez, championed the budgetary plan that has already secured the necessary votes in Parliament.

Snchez admitted that Uruguay is facing “a time of great difficulty,” particularly regarding Latin America, which is “shifting to the right”—a shift that arrives aggressively, intent on “cutting back rights.”

He stated that in this context, the FA “is holding firm” to continue “establishing new rights” in Uruguay, despite lacking a parliamentary majority.

Fernando Pereira highlighted the agreement reached with the Cabildo Abierto party to ensure the Accountability Report gets the green light, even though the opposition Republican Coalition has announced it will not vote for the bill in its general form.

“It wasn’t the Frente Amplio or Cabildo Abierto that won here; Uruguay won,” he said, noting that the FA seeks to translate government priorities into concrete resources—specifically policies addressing child poverty, as Vice President Cosse reaffirmed.

This report served as a resounding response to the rhetoric of former President Luis Lacalle Pou, who had defended his administration’s performance.

“He may speak beautifully in Plaza Matriz, but when it came time to hand over the government, he did so with a fiscal deficit one billion dollars higher than expected, plus another billion dollars in outstanding debt,” Fernando Pereira retorted.
