Cuban book *Indigo* speaks to children about courage, magic, family

Havana, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) The book *Indigo y el duende del zapato* (Indigo and the Shoe Elf) by Cuban writer Adriana Pino has immersed young readers in a fantastic journey where family and courage serve as antidotes to the disappearance of magic.

The “Tesoro de Papel” (Paper Treasure) Children’s Pavilion—located at the Linea and 18 Cultural Station, a venue for the 34th Havana International Book Fair—hosted the presentation of this physical edition published by Casa Editora Abril. In the story, a young girl named Indigo travels to the magical realm of Duendelanda (Elf-land) through her home’s old cuckoo clock.

Her adventure is no accident; she must overcome riddles and enchanted creatures to save that world from darkness, in a tale that celebrates family, friendship, and bravery as the pillars of true magic.

For Adriana Pino, sharing this work with children fulfills a childhood dream of her own—a time when she used to imagine herself traveling through her grandmother’s antique clock.

*Indigo* speaks not only of magic but also of empathy toward people with disabilities; her best friend is a boy who uses a wheelchair, and his dreams are one of the motivations behind Indigo’s mysterious journey, the author told Prensa Latina in an exclusive interview.

The work conveys other messages as well: an appreciation for trades and manual craftsmanship; the family as a central axis—evident in the lessons taught by the protagonist’s father; the family unit’s primary role in nurturing childhood imagination; and values such as friendship, honesty, courage, and altruism.

It is an inclusive book, Pino emphasized, revealing to the agency that a sequel to *Indigo* is already in the works, featuring sea elves as co-stars in the upcoming adventures.
