Peter Thiel swaps AI for oil in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) US information technology tycoon Peter Thiel, who has settled in Argentina, has purchased nearly 1.2 million shares of Vista, a company that controls a significant portion of Vaca Muerta oil field.

This stock market transaction reinforces the tech mogul’s bet on the country’s energy, infrastructure, and technology sectors, according to the online edition of the specialized newspaper *Ambito Financiero*, published.

Thiel Macro LLC, a fund controlled by the US businessman, acquired a stake worth approximately $76 million in Vista—the oil company founded and led by Miguel Galuccio that has become a key player in Argentina’s shale industry.

Thiel is also the CEO of Palantir, a firm that supplies the Pentagon with artificial intelligence data used in operations against Venezuela and Iran, US media reported.

Vista has become one of the primary private vehicles for growth in Argentina’s shale sector. The company currently produces around 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with nearly 70 percent of its output destined for export, *Ambito Financiero* adds.

The company has already invested over $6.5 billion in Argentina, yielding substantial revenue returns.

Vista’s growth is occurring alongside the transformation of Vaca Muerta into an export hub; oil production there has already surpassed one million barrels per day.

This is driving infrastructure development—specifically Vaca Muerta Oil Sur pipeline and port—aiming to eliminate one of the major bottlenecks that had limited export growth for years.
