Luisa Gonzalez’s candidacy for Ecuador prefecture rejected

Quito, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The Manabi Electoral Board rejected the registration of former Ecuadorian presidential hopeful Luisa Gonzalez as a candidate for the prefecture of that coastal province representing the Pachakutik movement.

The electoral body determined that Gonzalez failed to meet the internal requirements of the sponsoring political organization because her own party, the Citizen Revolution (RC), is currently under temporary suspension.

The Manabi Board upheld an objection filed by Mishel Mancheno, of the ruling National Democratic Action (ADN) movement, as well as one submitted by Eitel Zambrano, the common representative for an electoral alliance.

According to the technical-legal report reviewed by the Board, Pachakutik’s internal regulations require candidates to belong to the organization and to have been active members for at least two years.

The Manabi Electoral Delegation consulted the National Electoral Council (CNE) and found that neither Gonzalez nor her running mate, Gabriel Giler, were listed as affiliates or registered supporters of Pachakutik during that period.   The Electoral Board granted the political group a 48-hour window to rectify the candidacies; consequently, the decision does not yet amount to González’s definitive exclusion from the local elections scheduled for November 29.

“This objection is so illegal that Article 101 of the Democracy Code states only the organization’s legal representative may file an objection, and Mishel Mancheno (current president of the National Assembly) is not a representative of ADN,” Gonzalez wrote this Saturday on the social media platform X.   Meanwhile, RC president Gabriela Rivadeneira voiced her support for the candidate and accused the Executive branch of persecuting the opposition.
