The facility, which has a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), requires approval and technical assistance from Chinese advisors to ensure the stability of the National Electric System (SEN).

The centralized unit program already has a BESS operational in El Cotorro, Havana; it contributes 50 MW to grid regulation and provides backup service in the event of contingencies at large power plants.

With installation work progressing in Cueto, Bayamo (Granma province), and in the city of Holguin, the country aims to add 200 MW of regulation capacity to respond more quickly to demand peaks and optimize the use of renewable energy sources.
