The 22-year-old Chilean man was arrested in the capital’s Lo Espejo district as the prime suspect behind emails and an Instagram message also targeting Alberto Hurtado University and Diego Portales University.
“I will commit a massacre,” “I will attack anyone who crosses my path,” read the email, in which the sender claimed to belong to a Satanic neo-Nazi terrorist organization and attached an image showing a firearm and a knife.
Prosecutor Natalia Veliz reported that the weapon shown in the photograph was not found at the time of his arrest, although electronic devices—specifically a mobile phone and a laptop—were seized.
The young man’s defense team denied that he was the author of the emails, claiming he had copied the content from another profile.
Given that the individual has no prior criminal record, the 7th Guarantee Court of Santiago ordered a domestic travel ban, a requirement to sign in monthly, and a prohibition against approaching the educational institutions.
On Friday, the threats forced the three universities to suspend in-person classes for security reasons and to reschedule exams.
