Islam Alamgir, of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), defeated his opposition rival—Colonel (Ret.) Oli Ahmad of the 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami—by a vote of 255 to 88.

The election ended more than three decades of uncontested presidential races and marked a new milestone in Fakhrul’s political career, following some 15 years at the helm of the BNP as secretary-general.

Bangladesh held the presidential election due to the vacancy left by Mohammed Shahabuddin, who resigned in late July.
