Progressive Party members reject attempted attack against militant

Bogota, Ago 25 (Prensa Latina) Members of the progressive party Pacto Historico de Colombia today reject the attempt to attack ex-candidate for the House of Representatives for the department of Magdalena Naylea Barros.

Congresswoman Maria Fernanda Carrascal recalled that Barros obtained 15,625 votes in the past legislative elections and was the woman with the most support on the list of the Historical Pact in the region.

“When you attack a woman who has decided to go into politics, you are also trying to send a message to the rest: do politics in fear, shut up, back off. And there is where some far-right rhetoric becomes especially dangerous,’ the lawmaker said on social media.

He also said that while President Abelardo de la Espriella talks about order, authority and security, those who oppose need to know if their country project will provide real guarantees for them.

“We demand the state to protect it so that it can continue to do her political exercise. Violence cannot become the method of selecting who can participate in Colombian democracy,” he added, referring to Barros.

Representative Gabriel Becerra demanded immediate investigation, results and effective protection.

“Abelardo de la Espriella and his government have the obligation to guarantee the life and political exercise of the opposition.

We will not accept that weapons, threats and fear seek to silence the Historical Pact! Colombia cannot repeat the history of violence and extermination against opposition,’ he emphasized.
