Cases of the West Nile virus are on the rise in Greece

Athens, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The National Public Health Organization of Greece reported today that the spread of West Nile virus shows an upward trend, after 23 new indigenous cases were declared in the last week.

In total, from the beginning of the transmission period until August 5, 2026, 65 indigenous cases were recorded, of which 54 presented severe neurological manifestations such as encephalitis, meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis.

The statement specifies that 11 people had mild symptoms or no symptoms of the central nervous system.

Six deaths have been reported so far, all in patients over 65 years old with severe central nervous system involvement.

According to the authorities, the infection has a large silent circulation, since, according to the seroepidemiological data, for each case involving the central nervous system it is estimated that approximately 140 infected people who have mild symptoms or remain asymptomatic.

This means – the statement clarifies – that the registered serious cases represent only a small part of the actual circulation of the virus in the population.

In this regard, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported that cases have already been detected in Italy, Romania, France, North Macedonia, Spain and Germany.
