A report by the “Safe Childhood” (Crianza Segura) project, run by SOS Children’s Villages, specified that there were over 55,000 admissions due to falls, equivalent to 43.4 percent of total hospitalizations (162,000). Cases involving burns exceeded 25,000, accounting for 19.6 percent of the overall figure.

The source noted that more than 1.6 million hospitalizations happened last year across all age groups.

By state, Sao Paulo recorded the highest number of admissions with 19,837, followed by Minas Gerais (12,183) and Parana (10,708).

However, when considering the population of each state, Para showed the highest rate, with 120 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants.

Traffic accidents were the third leading cause, with 12,600 admissions, equivalent to 9.9 percent of the total.

The report also tallied 4,200 cases of poisoning, 644 cases of asphyxiation, 261 drownings, and 70 firearm-related accidents.

Furthermore, the study estimated that more than 90 percent of these incidents are preventable and highlighted the importance of educational campaigns, safe environments, and greater supervision of minors.

It also pointed to caregiver distraction—including the use of mobile phones—as a factor that can contribute to such tragedies.
