Parlatino backs initiatives in defense of peace

Panama City, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) Parlatino, headquartered in Panama since 2008, endorsed the initiatives for peace and the defense of multilateralism signed during the Second Inter-Parliamentary Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, held in Cambodia.

According to a statement from the institution, the head of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), Cuban lawmaker Rolando Gonzalez, warned that the deep transformations worldwide in recent months have increased challenges to international stability, also affecting Latin America and the Caribbean—a region declared a Zone of Peace in 2014 by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

He warned of rising geopolitical tensions, threats to state sovereignty, and other actions that jeopardize peaceful coexistence, respect for international law, and the progress the region has achieved regarding dialogue and cooperation.

Gonzalez also highlighted that in the misdt of conflicts, unilateral coercive measures, and growing uncertainties, it is essential to strengthen multilateralism, international solidarity, and mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes, the report adds.

He emphasized that parliaments must play an active role in building a more just international order by promoting dialogue, cooperation, and parliamentary diplomacy as essential tools to prevent conflict, consolidate peace, and address humanity’s common challenges.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed the regional legislative body’s commitment to defending peace and international law, as well as to promoting more democratic and inclusive international relations.

He also highlighted the institution’s support for cooperation initiatives—including the Parliamentary Alliance for Climate Action and Just Transition—affirming that such bodies have a responsibility to contribute to a future of greater justice, sustainability, and shared prosperity for present and future generations.
