The Lebanese Presidency stated that during a speech commemorating the anniversary of the proclamation of Greater Lebanon in 1920, Aoun stressed the need to restore the country’s role among nations.
The president affirmed that the proclamation of Greater Lebanon was “an achievement in crystallizing the Lebanese ideal through a political entity that encompassed all Lebanese factions,” in what he considered a constitutional consecration of the State and its mission.
The head of State explained that this process continued with the adoption of the Lebanese Constitution and the proclamation of the Republic in 1926, the 100th anniversary of which is being commemorated this year.
Aoun thus remembered the historical sequence that, in his words, continued subsequently with independence and the establishment of State institutions.
The proclamation of Greater Lebanon took place on September 1, 1920, during the French Mandate, and the anniversary that Lebanon commemorated on Tuesday marked 106 years since that event.
