Evangelical groups declare support for Lula in elections

Brasilia, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) Three Brazilian evangelical organizations have expressed their support for the re-election of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in an effort to challenge the far right's influence over this voting bloc, *CartaCapital* reported.   The Association of Small and Medium-Sized Evangelical Churches and Temples of Rio de Janeiro State, the Association of Evangelical Women with Christ and for Life, and the Jesus the Liberator Movement signed an open letter backing the president's candidacy for the upcoming October presidential elections.

These organizations express that Lula’s government respects religious diversity and base their position on biblical principles linked to social justice, the protection of vulnerable sectors, and the defense of human rights.

The group unanimously approved supporting Lula’s re-election and challenged the notion that evangelicals are a homogeneous electorate necessarily aligned with the far right.

This stance is significant given the electoral weight of this sector, which represents 26.9 percent of the Brazilian population, according to data cited by *CartaCapital*.

The latest Real Time Big Data poll showed 42 percent support for Flavio and 29 percent for the president within this segment; the Nexus poll showed 43 percent and 27 percent, respectively; while AtlasIntel showed the senator leading with 51.7 percent against 19.9 percent.

The reverse is true among Catholics: Lula garnered 42 percent support compared to Flavio’s 25 percent in the Real Time Big Data poll, 45 percent versus 30 percent in the Nexus poll, and 54.3 percent versus 30.3 percent in the AtlasIntel poll.
