Cuba: Measures assessed to ensure water supply amidst blockade

Havana, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel met with officials and experts to assess measures for ensuring the water supply in Havana amidst the energy crisis caused by the tightening of the United States blockade.

The meeting focused primarily on securing the supply through generator sets, maintaining the electrical grids linked to the service, and achieving energy independence to guarantee water distribution in the Cuban capital.

It was reported during the meeting that distributed generation generator sets have been mobilized to support the first 29 selected supply sources and pumping stations.

Nearly 70 sites have been visited to assess on-the-ground conditions and ensure the pumping of the vital resource, according to the Presidency of the Republic’s website.

Deputy Prime Minister Ines Maria Chapman emphasized the need for rigorous valve management, the elimination of leaks, equipment protection, and operator training.

“This is a specific task that we will follow up on,” she stated.

As part of these actions, authorities are prioritizing the use of renewable energy sources, installing solar complexes and photovoltaic parks at key supply sources, as well as energy storage systems at major pumping stations. Access to water in Havana has been directly affected by the energy blockade imposed by Washington, which has now gone over 200 days without guaranteeing a stable fuel supply to the island.
