At this gathering, led by Parliament President Gustavo Porras, provisions were approved such as the prohibition against applying laws of an extraterritorial nature within Nicaragua that have been issued by other states, groups of states, or international organizations.
The reform also establishes restrictions on eligibility for public office or elected positions for individuals who participate in acts considered to be coup-related or treasonous, who call for military intervention or foreign interference—including sanctions or external funding—or who violate the fundamental principles of the Constitution.
Another change establishes seven-year terms for elected offices, positions appointed by the Presidency, and public servants elected or ratified by the National Assembly.
The provision also sets a seven-year term for the Commander-in-Chief of the Nicaraguan Army and the chiefs of the National Police force.
Likewise, the date of the presidential inauguration is being changed to January 18, in honor of the birth of the national hero and world-renowned poet Ruben Dario.
Furthermore, the reform strengthens the powers of the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), enabling it to verify, sanction, and revoke the legal status of political parties or candidates that violate the principles established in the Constitution.
