The top US diplomat arrives in Quito from Colombia, where Washington also seeks to deepen political, economic, and security cooperation.
Cooperation against drug trafficking and organized crime will be one of the key issues of the meeting, at a time when Ecuador maintains close coordination with its northern counterpart regarding military, security, and intelligence matters.
The Communist Party of Ecuador (PCE) warned, “This visit takes place during a period of latent threat against the peoples of the world: the plundering of our resources, the militarization of our territories, and the subordination of our governments to Washington’s agenda.”
The visit to Quito coincides with increasing US military involvement in operations conducted in partnership with Ecuador, particularly in border areas and the Pacific Ocean.
