Cuban Classics and Contemporary Films at London Latino Film Festival

Havana, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) The iconic image of actor Sergio Corrieri looking through a spyglass in the film *Memories of Underdevelopment* (1968)—directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea—will feature in the Cuban showcase at the London Latino Film Festival, running from October 2 to 6, official sources announced.

This was announced at a press conference by Alexis Triana, president of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), who highlighted that audiences will be able to enjoy films ranging from classics to the most contemporary works.

In addition to *Memories of Underdevelopment*, the showcase includes the documentary *One Way or Another* (1977) by Sara Gomez—the first film directed by a woman in Cuba—and the feature film *Strawberry and Chocolate* (1993), which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film the following year.

Also included is *Yuli*, inspired by the childhood of Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, who was a member of the Royal Ballet in London from 1998 to 2015 and currently directs the Birmingham Royal Ballet as well as his own company in Cuba.

Another film to be screened is *Baracoa* (2025), inspired by an Italian revolutionary naturalized in Cuba; the film follows a journey across the island to that city, known as Cuba’s “First City.”

During the conference, Triana highlighted the festival poster created by Nelson Ponce, noting that he is “once again the designer behind the image of a film festival.” The event also includes the sale of Cuban film posters, he emphasized.
