Brazil rejects US criticism of action against organized crime

Brasilia, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Minister of Justice and Public Security, Wellington Cesar Lima e Silva, rejected US criticism regarding the country's actions against the criminal organizations First Capital Command (PCC) and Red Command (CV).

According to the minister, data on operations carried out by Brazilian security forces contradict Washington’s assessment and show an increase in actions against organized crime.

As reported by the news portal G1, the minister also highlighted the coordination among federal, state, and municipal forces, upholding that Brazil is undergoing a period of greater institutional integration to confront criminal organizations.   These statements followed the Donald Trump administration’s inclusion of critical references to Brazil in a document sent to the US Congress on September 15 regarding major drug-producing and transit countries for fiscal year 2027.

Brazil does not appear on the list of 23 countries formally included in that report, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security clarified; however, it noted that there was a passing mention of the South American nation.

The Brazilian government also rejected allegations of failures or omissions in the fight against transnational organized crime, pointing out that the US assessment fails to consider measures recently passed.

The news portal Brasil 247 reported that members of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s administration consider the US document—which criticizes the response to the PCC and CV—to be “very serious,” noting concerns that the United States could use it as a pretext to justify unilateral measures.
