Nicaragua highlights participation in public consultation on reforms

Managua, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua's Co-President, Rosario Murillo, highlighted the consultation sessions on constitutional reforms held in municipalities across the country as part of the "Hay Patria" plan, which emphasizes on the importance of preserving peace, security, stability, and social harmony in Nicaragua.

During her daily address, the leader described the sessions as expressions of direct and participatory democracy, involving families, women, youth, producers, and workers from various communities.

The reforms—approved in the first legislative session following 36 days of consultations with all sectors of the country—establish, among other things, that no law or regulation from another state, group of states, or international body shall have legal effect in Nicaragua.

Likewise, the text of the amendments proposes restrictions on running for public office for individuals who boost foreign interference, call for military intervention, or support specific actions against the country.

The bill also sets seven-year terms for popularly elected offices and for other officials elected, appointed, or ratified by the National Assembly, as well as for the leadership of the Army and the Police.

It also extends the terms of currently serving officials to seven years.

The “Hay Patria” plan envisions taking the consultation process to at least 90 municipalities and departmental capitals prior to the debate and approval of the reforms in the second legislative session, scheduled for January 2027.
