Israeli attacks continue; Lebanon questions framework agreement

Beirut, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Israel continued its attacks on various areas of southern Lebanon, while President Joseph Aoun warned that the ongoing Israeli presence on Lebanese territory hinders the implementation of the agreed-upon framework.

Israeli actions included airstrikes, artillery fire, gunfire, detonations, and the demolition and burning of homes in the districts of Tyre, Nabatieh, Marjeyoun, and Bint Jbeil, according to reports from Lebanon’s National News Agency.

These operations coincided with Aoun’s participation in a preparatory meeting in Paris for an international conference aimed at supporting the Lebanese Army and the Internal Security Forces.

In his remarks, Aoun stated that the tripartite framework reached with Israel under U.S. mediation seeks to end the war and usher in a period of security and stability; however, he maintained that its implementation cannot be completed as long as attacks and the Israeli presence in parts of Lebanese territory persist.

The president also noted that the Lebanese Army’s growing responsibilities—particularly in the south—include reinforcing the State’s presence and extending its authority, and he called for international support to strengthen the capabilities of the armed and security forces.

The framework agreement reached in Washington on June 26 envisions a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the subsequent deployment of the Lebanese Army into the evacuated areas.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israeli attacks between March 2 and September 17 resulted in 4,386 deaths and 12,407 injuries. The cumulative toll since October 8, 2023, stands at 8,953 dead and 30,643 wounded.
