A Cuban delegation is participating in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Global Conference on One Health Measures in Agrifood Systems, which is taking place through tomorrow at its headquarters in Rome.
At the event, Dr. Odalys Bravo, national coordinator of the One Health Sanitary Strategy and head of the island’s delegation, noted that this approach is not a new practice for the country, but rather a strategy consolidated since 1962 with the creation of the National Rabies Prevention and Control Program.
She further explained that it is incorporated into the National Health Strategy and the National System for Science, Technology, and Innovation.
At the conference, Cuba presented key results reflecting the practical and sustained application of this approach, including the implementation of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance and the operation of a network of 160 microbiology laboratories.
Other examples cited included the application of the World Health Organization’s ” Tricycle” protocol and the contributions of the veterinary biopharmaceutical industry to zoonosis prevention and food safety.
The Cuban experience—presented as an example of the integrated application of the One Health approach, underpinned by public policies, scientific capabilities, and community participation—extends beyond the national level through cooperation with Caribbean countries and is also reflected in regulatory advances such as animal welfare legislation.
