A meeting to address the growing risk posed by rising sea levels, mobilize political leadership, and boost multisectoral collaboration will be held within the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The organization noted that participants seek to develop comprehensive solutions and concrete commitments to curb the rise and ensure a resilient and sustainable future.
Recent studies point out that a half-meter rise by the end of the century could force from 150 to 300 million people to leave their homes; meanwhile, salinization could leave up to 500 million without reliable access to fresh water or land suitable for food production.
The early warning systems, mangrove restoration, improved drainage installation, and other initiatives to buy time and reduce the impact of flooding will be addressed.
Attendees will also target on legal protections for climate refugees and island nations at risk.
