“Israel has the atomic bomb and other weapons of mass destruction, yet it demands inspections of Iran,” Pezeshkian affirmed during his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, IRNA reported.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) lists Israel among the nine States estimated to have nuclear weapons.
Tel Aviv keeps a “nuclear ambiguity” policy and does not officially confirm or deny the possession of such weaponry.
Israel is not a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and, according to United Nations documents, not all of its nuclear facilities are subject to a comprehensive safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Iran, in turn, is a State party to the NPT and has kept a safeguards agreement with the IAEA since 1974.
Pezeshkian noted that, for the Iranian people, the nuclear technology represents “part of development” and has applications in medicine, agriculture, and electricity generation.
