Former Brazilian Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro convicted of defamation

Brasilia, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) sentenced former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro to one year in prison and a fine for defaming Deputy Tabata Amaral in posts made in 2021, according to press reports.

The case stemmed from posts made by Bolsonaro in October 2021 regarding a bill introduced by Amaral for the free distribution of menstrual hygiene products.

In his messages, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro claimed the initiative appeared to serve corporate interests and linked the lawmaker to businessman Jorge Paulo Lemann, whom he described as her mentor and sponsor.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that the statements exceeded the bounds of political debate and harmed the lawmaker’s honor; therefore, they could not be protected by the immunity granted to legislators.

The reporting justice also determined that substituting the prison sentence with a sanction restricting rights was not appropriate, given that the convicted individual is in the United States—at a location unknown to Brazilian authorities, according to the case records.

Eduardo Bolsonaro has resided in the U.S. since February 2025—having traveled there to shield himself from what he termed judicial persecution in Brazil—and lost his seat in the Chamber of Deputies due to excessive absences from parliamentary sessions.

He also faces other legal proceedings in Brazil, including a four-year, two-month prison sentence for coercion handed down by the STF’s First Panel last June and upheld after an appeal was rejected this month.
