“Baracoa” explores the distant relationship of leader Fidel Castro, and his son Pepe, who holds homophobic prejudices. It also highlights the special bond Pepe has with his doctor, Jimmy, who works at night as the drag queen Estrellita.
After Felipe’s death, his son and the doctor embark on a road trip from Havana to Baracoa, in the eastern tip of the Caribbean nation, touring contemporary Cuba through the eyes of two characters with opposing viewpoints.
Also starring Cuban actors Carlos Luis Gonzalez and Yadier Fernandez, the film was previously screened at Havana International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, where it received the “Sumate” diversity award, and was screened out of competition at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy.
