The main activities are held in Assisi, in the Umbria region, where civil and religious authorities and diplomatic representatives gather to commemorate the religious figure who died on October 3, 1226, at the Porziuncola chapel.
President Sergio Mattarella is participating in the ceremonies in Umbria, including the Eucharistic celebration and the lighting of the votive lamp, offered by Italian municipalities at the saint’s tomb.
The commemoration extends beyond the religious realm. The Italian Government and the National Committee established for the 800th anniversary have presented Francis as a figure linked to values considered central to a contemporary society, including peace, fraternity, solidarity, and environmental protection.
Ambassadors accredited to the Italian Republic, along with regional presidents and mayors of regional capitals, were invited to the commemoration in Assisi in recognition of the international significance attributed to the Franciscan message.
