The trip to the polls on November 29, announced by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, has opened a relatively unexpected chapter in the final stage of 2026.
Sanchez could have waited until the end of his second term in mid 2027 to call general elections. However, the rejection of two housing-related decree-laws in the Congress of Deputies on Friday caused him to change his mind.
While the term “European Left bastion” might seem like an exaggeration, the current Executive, despite ups and downs, really has a track record that confirms its progressive profile.
Nevertheless, it failed to push through housing reforms, and promises to build public housing units were still pending.
The Cortes (Parliament) were dissolved on Tuesday and, taking advantage of this move to hold elections, the president intends to adopt measures with significant social impact.
