Che’s legacy and solidarity with Cuba discussed in Italy

Rome, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Abel Prieto, president of Cuba’s Casa de las Américas, described the discussion held with Italians—mostly young people—regarding the significance of Ernesto "Che" Guevara as inspiring due to its ethical dimension.

Speaking to Prensa Latina, Prieto highlighted the commitment shown by the young people present to the struggle for an alternative to the “terrible world we are living in”; he noted that they are anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist, and communist—and proud of it.

The Cuban writer and essayist emphasized the stimulating nature of the exchange, particularly the questions asked by the young people. They were keen to learn more about Che’s concept of the “New Man” and the ongoing battle in the realms of culture and communication, all just days before the October 9th anniversary of his assassination in Bolivia.

“They are deeply engaged with issues of major importance,” stated Prieto, who is also a deputy in the National Assembly of People’s Power. He deemed the thought and figure of the Argentine-Cuban guerrilla fighter “essential” at this moment, “because he represents a vanguard not only in political terms but also in moral ones.”

University professor Luciano Vasapollo also drew attention to the enduring relevance of Che’s thought and work. He argued that it is necessary to teach young people “that Che is not just an image on a T-shirt; he represents an ethical, economic, and political ideal that remains relevant today.”

During the discussion, which lasted over two hours, the Italian intellectual stated that upholding Che’s ideas and sharing them with the youth offers them a perspective of socialist democracy in the face of the rise of the international right wing.

Addressing the issue, Prieto spoke of the dangers associated with the fascist-leaning right wing that has taken hold in Latin American governments, while also warning about the results of the first round of Brazil’s presidential election and denouncing the blockade against Cuba.
