Dominican lawyer calls for avoiding excessive police force

Santo Domingo, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Dominican lawyer Luis Yepez Suncar warned of the need to ensure that the fight against crime does not lead to the disproportionate or illegitimate use of force by the police.

Yepez Suncar, who is also a member of the Central Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), upheld that concern over criminal and violent acts should not lead to the belief that lawbreakers can be confronted without limits; the actions of security agencies are also subject to the Constitution and legal regulations.

He stated that the debate should not focus on defending the rights of criminals, but rather on ensuring that officers act within established frameworks, without assuming that anyone deemed a suspect can be deprived of their life.

The National Human Rights Commission even announced it would bring complaints regarding these cases before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, while the Dominican Institute of Criminal Law recently demanded that the actions of security agencies align with the Constitution.

Ombudsman Pablo Ulloa also questioned the idea of taking a life as a substitute for a judicial sentence and called for the preservation of the rule of law.

Yepez Suncar warned that “we are all at risk of losing our lives if police force is allowed to be used without necessary controls, even if we have not committed any crime.”

He affirmed that public safety and respect for fundamental rights are not incompatible goals and called for combating crime effectively, yet within legal limits.
