IOM says Yemen displacement tops 200,000

Aden, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) More than 200,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since early September due to intensifying hostilities, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported.

The organization stated that the clashes forced 201,217 people, comprising 33,776 families, to flee their homes.

IOM Director General Amy Pope affirmed, “People are fleeing to save their lives, but they have nowhere safe to go. Today, they need shelter, food, and safety.”

Pope called donors to act urgently to address a lack of resources.

The military escalation intensified in September after months of deterioration, and represents a new setback for the relative calm associated with the ceasefire started in April 2022.

Yemen has remained mired in conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several regions in 2014. In March 2015, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened to support the government.
