As part of the international campaign against the US blockade against Cuba, participants carried signs reading “USA hands off Cuba!” and “Let Cuba live!”
Friends of the Caribbean nation in Quezon City, northeast Manila, commemorated the start of the Independence War, launched on October 10, 1868, by the “Father of the Homeland” Carlos Manuel de Cespedes.
Members of the Philippines-Cuba Friendship and Cultural Association and labor movements from the Manggagawa, Laban Manggagawa, and Lakas ng Masa/Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino parties attended the public event.
Anti-imperialist activists, the International Peoples’ Assembly, ARYA Progresibo, and the National Federation of Labor Unions also joined in to support Cuba’s sovereignty and right to self-determination.
Demands for ending the US blockade, including its energy blockade against Cuba, were made and Washington’s threat of military intervention against the Caribbean nation was rejected.
