The meeting aims to address the conduct of Lula and Bolsonaro’s campaigns during the final stage of the presidential race, the runoff of which is scheduled for October 25.
The meeting follows a series of decisions and legal challenges before the Electoral Court on posts and digital tools used by the two presidential candidates, in a campaign marked by mutual accusations of disinformation.
One of the most recent incidents was the suspension of the “Exercito do Lula” (Lula’s Army) WhatsApp channel, coordinated by Congressman Andre Janones, which, at the time of writing, had amassed more than 4.1 million followers.
On Sunday, Nunes Marques suspended the channel’s operations after a request from the campaign of Liberal Party (PL) candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, who accused it of spreading fake news.
Tuesday’s meeting will take place amid institutional tension over the limits of electoral campaigning, the circulation of information on social media, and the respective powers of the several members of Brazil’s highest electoral authority.
