Official figures on housing deficit questioned in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) The *Fuerza del Pueblo* (FP) party has questioned the Dominican government's methodology for calculating the housing deficit, pointing out discrepancies between the figures provided by President Luis Abinader and those from the Ministry of Housing.

The organization called on the Ministry of Housing and Buildings and the National Statistics Office to publish the procedure used to determine the shortfall between 2019 and 2025, as well as the statistical sources, variables, and microdata underpinning the results.

Pedro Pablo Diaz, head of the FP’s Urban Planning and Housing Secretariat, deemed it necessary for authorities to present verifiable figures regarding the number of homes built, handed over, or improved during that period.

The controversy arose after Abinader stated that the housing deficit had dropped from 806,778 units in 2019 to 696,598 in 2025—a reduction of 110,180 units.

The president attributed this result not only to state programs but also to private sector participation and the construction of low-cost housing facilitated by tax incentives.

However, days later, Minister Rodriguez estimated the shortfall at around 1.4 million homes—a figure that contrasts sharply with the one presented by the head of state.

Diaz maintained that any reduction in the deficit must be backed by public policies capable of addressing the needs of families living in homes that lack adequate infrastructure and basic services.
