Cuba calls for a fairer international order to put an end to poverty

Havana, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez called for the creation of a new international order—fair, equitable, and democratic—that fosters the common good and prosperity for all people, on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

In a message posted on his X account, the Foreign Minister warned that efforts to end extreme poverty worldwide have stalled, according to the United Nations 2026 report on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Rodriguez noted that this year, approximately 826 million people—10 percent of the global population—are living in extreme poverty.

The head of Cuban diplomacy observed that, amidst this situation, global military spending reached $2.887 trillion in 2025, marking the eleventh consecutive year of growth.

VHe pointed out that the world’s 12 wealthiest billionaires hold more wealth than the poorest half of the global population.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed annually on October 17, recognizes that ending this scourge is inseparable from the protection of human rights, human dignity, and peace.

According to the United Nations, the 2026 observance focuses on the theme “Safe Homes for All,” highlighting adequate housing as the foundation for security, participation, and a dignified life.
