Cuban Ambassador to Brazil rejects controversial UN event

Brasilia, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) – Cuba’s ambassador to Brazil, Víctor Cairo, has criticized an event organized by the United States at the United Nations headquarters in New York, denouncing U.S. diplomatic maneuvers directed against his country.

In an article published in the newspaper *Folha de S. Paulo*, Cairo described the meeting—held on October 19—as questionable, arguing that it contradicts the principles of the international organization.

He rejected the participation of representatives from anti-Cuban sectors in the state of Florida, and criticized the use of facilities belonging to an entity created to preserve global peace and security for activities that, in his view, serve interests extraneous to the United Nations Charter.

The meeting, convened by the U.S. mission, prompted protests from Cuban diplomats in the American city.

The Cuban delegation denounced the presence of individuals linked to terrorist acts against the Caribbean nation.

Cairo also connected this reprehensible event to the upcoming debate in the UN General Assembly—scheduled for October 27 and 28—regarding a resolution that calls for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States more than six decades ago.

According to the diplomat, the U.S. mission intends to influence the positions of member states through pressure and arguments that he characterized as false.

Condemning the blockade is an ethical and humanistic duty, as well as a matter of respect for life, the ambassador stated, while highlighting the consequences of these restrictions on the Cuban population’s access to food, medicine, and fuel.
