“Today, several reports have appeared claiming that Cuban doctors earn more than Mexican doctors—this is false, absolutely false—and that they are hired through a company. That is also false. It is a direct hiring arrangement,” the president stated. The head of the executive branch emphasized that these professionals from the island “earn exactly the same as a Mexican doctor.”
“They provide significant help in many remote areas where they are working, as there are no medical specialists willing to go to those locations. But they are not hired through any company; it is a direct hiring arrangement,” she stressed.
In March, Sheinbaum described the bilateral agreement—under which physicians from the Caribbean nation provide services in Mexico—as very positive, noting that they are of great assistance.
The president remembered that it was Cuban doctors who provided help during the pandemic, under extremely difficult conditions.
Furthermore, she explained that the cooperation with Cuba “is clearly part of a bilateral agreement. I mentioned that in the state of Baja California Sur it is hard to get Mexican medical specialists to go there, yet the Cuban doctors are willing to work in those locations. In many rural areas where we need medical specialists, they are there,” she stressed.
