Pinar extends its leading position in Cuban Baseball

Havana, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) — Pinar del Rio has widened its lead in the Western Pool, while Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba are now tied at the top of the standings in the Eastern group during the National Baseball Series.

Pinar del Rio team defeated Artemisa 5-2, and to its further delight, its rival from Matanzas fell to Villa Clara 15-7, while Havana’s Industriales secured two victories over the Piratas of La Isla.

In the first game—a continuation of a match suspended days earlier at the Cristobal Labra stadium—Industriales won 13-10 in ten innings. They then won the second game by the mercy-rule (15-1), scoring 12 runs in the opening inning alone.

Mayabeque also made quick work of their opponent, defeating Cienfuegos 15-2 at the 5 de Septiembre stadium.

Following Pinar and Matanzas in the standings are Industriales (9-7), Mayabeque (8-8), Villa Clara (8-9), Artemisa (8-10), Cienfuegos (7-10), and La Isla (3-13).

On the other side of the baseball map, Las Tunas unleashed an offense of 13 hits to beat Camaguey 12-2 at Julio Antonio Mella stadium, where rain brought an early end to the game after six innings.

Santiago de Cuba reached the same record after splitting a doubleheader with Granma at Martires de Barbados stadium.

Granma won the first game 13-8, but Santiago de Cuba responded in the second matchup with a 6-3 victory.

The respective victories of Holguin and Sancti Spiritus allowed these squads to catch up with Granma, each now holding a 10-8 record, after they held Guantanamo and Ciego de Avila scoreless, respectively.

Holguin defeated Guantanamo 7-0 at Calixto Garcia stadium, while Sancti Spiritus secured a narrow 1-0 win over Ciego de Avila.

The standings in the eastern division now show Las Tunas and Santiago in the lead (11-7), followed by Granma, Holguin, and Sancti Spiritus (10-8), Ciego de Avila (9-9), Camaguey (6-12), and Guantanamo (5-13).
