The Maestro’s work also encompassed photography, graphic design, and restoration. He is particularly noted for his paintings, which are distinctly realistic in style and feature landscapes, seascapes, fishermen, and historic buildings from his native region—all rendered with a technical mastery that has earned him recognition both within and outside of Cuba.
Rodriguez Segura’s film gives an intimate look at this figure, whose creative contributions are considered part of the cultural heritage of Gibara. The premiere took place as part of a festival that, this year, places special emphasis on arts education and cinema as a tool for preserving memory.
Following its presentation in Holguin, *Viajero de extraviada ruta* is set to be featured at the Gibara International Film Festival and the Second National Showcase and Competition of Cuban Cinema—fitting venues for a work that preserves the legacy of an artist inseparable from his own landscape.
According to the filmmakers, the documentary seeks to go beyond the figure of Maestro Catala himself, aiming instead to reveal the soul of an artist who has left a definitive mark on the region’s culture.
