NAM decries at the UN the intensification of U.S. blockade on Cuba

United Nations, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) — The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) denounced before the United Nations General Assembly the intensification of the United States’ embargo against Cuba, its extraterritorial nature, and the humanitarian harm inflicted upon the Caribbean nation’s people.

Speaking on behalf of the 120 member countries of the NAM, Uganda presented this position during the 34th annual introduction of the draft resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”

The representative expressed deep concern regarding measures announced by the U.S. government this year—an unprecedented blockade against Havana designed to obstruct fuel supplies, penalize countries that maintain commercial relations with the island, and impose sanctions on foreign companies, banks, and entities.

It was noted that these measures have had a devastating effect on all critical sectors of the Cuban economy—including healthcare, the education system, electricity supply, nutrition, agriculture, and trade—as well as on the daily lives of ordinary Cubans.

The NAM pointed out that recent disruptions to fuel supplies to Cuba have had severe consequences for electricity generation and the operation of essential public services; prolonged blackouts have impacted hospitals, schools, and water distribution and sanitation systems.

The Ugandan representative added that, during this period, Cuba received only one oil tanker over the last 10 months. Furthermore, more than 40 foreign banks have curtailed their operations with the Caribbean nation, and over 140 international transfers remain pending—including payments for the acquisition of solar and wind energy technology.

The Non-Aligned Movement reiterated its call for the United States government to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockades against Cuba, to remove the additional unilateral measures imposed since 2017—including the unilateral and arbitrary designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism—and to refrain from military aggression against Cuba.
