Nicaragua condemns at the UN the U.S. blockade on Cuba

United Nations, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) — Nicaragua condemned the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and reiterated its demand for an end to this unilateral policy.

Speaking during the presentation of a draft resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”—introduced by Havana—Nicaragua’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jaime Hermida, reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with the Caribbean nation.

On behalf of the Nicaraguan people, the diplomat extended greetings to the Cuban people and expressed his recognition of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz; Army General Raúl Castro Ruz; President Miguel Diaz-Canel; and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

The Nicaraguan representative stated that his country’s position is rooted in the principles of justice, sovereignty, and respect for human rights, and he expressed his rejection of both the continuation and the intensification of coercive measures against Cuba.

Furthermore, he upheld that the blockade disregards international conventions and the will expressed, year after year, by peoples and governments that defend the right of the Cuban people to life, peace, and development.

Hermida announced that Nicaragua would vote in favor of the resolution presented by Cuba, consistent with its support for the demand to end the various forms of aggression against the island.

The Nicaraguan diplomat also urged the United Nations to fulfill the role for which it was created, and suggested that the organization needs to be renewed so that it can address current challenges and contribute to peace and the development of all peoples.
