Iran decries US blockade on Cuba, stating it violates UN Charter

United Nations, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) — Iran condemned the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba before the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, demanding an immediate end to a policy it described as contrary to international law.

Speaking during the presentation of a draft resolution on the need to end the blockade, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with the Cuban government and people.

The diplomat challenged the argument that the intensification of these measures is intended to promote democracy, asserting that no government has the right to determine the political future of another sovereign state.

He noted that unilateral sanctions—including so-called “autonomous” measures—disproportionately harm women, children, and the elderly by undermining their health, security, and well-being, and by hindering their enjoyment of human rights.

The Iranian representative called not only for the immediate lifting of the blockade but also for full reparations to Cuba for the damages caused, as well as accountability for those who kero this policy.

Furthermore, he argued that these measures contradict the principles of sovereign equality, international cooperation, and non-intervention enshrined in the UN Charter, while fostering confrontation and deepening divisions between nations.

The diplomat characterized the sanctions as “economic terrorism,” adding that blockades enforced through the use of armed force constitute acts of aggression under international law.

Iran will maintain its support for Cuba and continue to stand in its defense, the Iranian delegate affirmed.
